KWA Meets to Discuss a Healthier Future for Beargrass Creek
Kentucky Waterways Alliance hosted the first community Beargrass meeting on January 26 at Eyedia Shop in Louisville. More than 20 people braved the cold to share their ideas about how we can all work together toward a better Beargrass Creek.
During the meeting, we talked about our concerns for Beargrass and the issues we've experienced firsthand. But, we didn't stop there! We also talked about solutions - how we can all do our part to protect the creek.
We discovered that there is a great need to have one portal available that includes information about ways to act on behalf of the creek. To accommodate this need, we have since created a webpage and calendar where we can post cleanups, events, or other community efforts to celebrate or restore the Beargrass. Check it out here.
We’re also working with graphics students from Sullivan College of Technology & Design to create a more sophisticated interactive web portal for community use. More to come about this exciting new partnership this summer!
At the meeting, we also learned that more education is needed on creek issues. Our second meeting in March was a direct response to this idea. We invited Kentucky Division of Water geologist Rob Blair to speak on ground water and karst topography in the Beargrass watershed. Rob’s presentation was very informative and entertaining. Everyone learned a lot about the way the creek loses and gains water from the storm sewer system. Stay tuned for more events and educational opportunities!
